Prioritizing Joy

ree

A major reason why many don’t experience joy is due to the fact that it's not made a priority. Most may prioritize work, finances, and physical appearance but pure joy isn’t usually at the top of the list. Yes, it may be true that many believe that work, finances, and physical appearance will lead to joy but it's unusual that joy itself is prioritized.

Discovering the things that bring you joy hint at what you are really looking for. What is it about those things that create a sense of joy? For example, work may bring you joy because it comes with a sense of purpose. Having a specific financial status may bring a sense of stability. And your physical appearance may bring a sense of confidence. But here’s the thing, you cant work 24/7, money is currency which ebbs and flows, and physical appearance changes with life experiences. Each of these things comes with limitation.

The key to prioritizing joy is finding it outside of material things. It is a mindset and heart disposition. It is an internal source versus and external resource. And finding it takes some time but starting is truly worth it. Starting brings you one step closer to experiencing it fully. Now, once you discover joy be intentional about sitting with it daily. This is how you prioritize it. It's not a matter of getting more or doing more but being. Be still with joy and feel it. Allow joy to be built inside of you.

Life Work

Based on this article set aside at least 10 minutes to consider the following:

  • List three resources of joy, this includes external things, people, and/or places that bring you joy.

  • Now, consider the underlying core beliefs or values found in these resources. For example, work creating a sense of purpose. Physical appearance creating a sense of confidence. Finances creating a sense of stability. In doing this you are able to discover that you are actually seeking purpose, confidence, and stability.

  • With that being said, close your eyes and consider the core of what you are seeking (ie. purpose, confidence, and stability). How does the reality of those core values make you feel?

  • Be sure to journal your experience.
