Finding Courage for Everyday Living

ree

Being brave is not exclusive to conquering giants or climbing mountains. Sometimes everyday living may require the necessity of being brave. When one is faced with challenges, be it personally or professionally, having courage assists in getting to the other side. Finding courage may be a bit easier than many think.

Courage is being able to face challenging situations without fear (or at times, in spite of fear). It includes the willingness to stand firm and/or go forward when (possibly) nothing in you desires to. When we think about courage, some believe it takes building up super-strength when in it actually takes rest. Being bold is standing firm and standing firm takes less effort than fighting. And therein lies the secret to courage—understanding that courage isn’t an act of fighting but an act of stillness. You will find that courage overrides fear.

Stillness in the mind shows confidence and grants access to wisdom. Fear on the other hand leads to confusion, inactivity, or hyperactivity—none of which are useful to succeeding. Finding courage requires finding stillness within. It is from this place that we are able to navigate life more boldly, no matter the circumstance.

Based on this article, set aside at least 10 minutes and consider the following:

  • Consider stillness and the last time you found yourself rested in the face of a challenge. Reflect on how you were able to navigate through that situation.

  • Now, consider a time when you worried about facing a challenge. Reflect on how you were able to navigate through that situation.

  • Take a moment to consider whether or not you have the willingness to be courageous.

  • Be sure to journal your experience.
